Great pass, except the passing driver obviously cut the corner completely on the inside, and should have been required to give the place back or been penalized...so, not a LEGAL pass.

PS, is this a “pass”, or just a “block”? I’m no motorsports expert, but I feel that the two should be distinguished. One is offensive, the other purely defensive.

Not at all an uncommon opinion, even at the time. I liked Zanardi, he was one of my favorites as a kid, but that pass was bullshit.

I still feel the original “the pass” should have warranted a penalty of sorts and not ended up getting the win. If you have to go all 4 wheels off track to make the pass, it’s not legitimate pass.
