We’ve seen a few American comedies here and I’ve noticed some humor/jokes must not translate well, as evidenced by Americans laughing and Swedes dead silent. I thought the last line in Barbie was well played, but every expat who saw it here this weekend said their theaters were similarly silent after that joke.

I saw it this weekend while in Sweden and us three (only) Americans in the audience cackled at the last line, and the rest of the theater was dead silent. I think the American/Barbie cultural touch points maybe didn’t translate to the land of universal healthcare, body positivity, and gender equality. They LOVED the

Spoilers for those who haven’t watched yet…

Aw, darn. I hope it is an amicable split for everyone involved. Well...I guess if he’s going to rebound, J-Cool would be more than a fun time!

White is married (to a total cutie badass) and has two kids. Love that they can have flirtatious banter, but he seems pretty smitten with his family.

Just saw it and searched online for reviews. Definitely creepy suspense in parts, a few jump scares to give you bang for your buck. I love horror movies and seeing them at the theater—the sounds effects of this were great so I’m glad it hit theaters, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have caught it on Hulu. However,

Their body language in that video is very different from each other. He’s fixated on her and Shakira practically welcomes what looks like a meltdown from her kid. Anyone who has been trapped in a conversation at a party understands this scene.

I read Quit Like a Woman and was struck by the research about how alcohol companies specifically target women now because they ran out of male demographics to pursue. They’ve been guiding women to drink more overall and harder stuff. The “wine mom” aesthetic with drinks at every function, to cope, or to reward

Great considerations to ponder.

Well said and thank you. I’m blown away by the alcohol-splainers in this comments section! 😵‍💫

There is no safe amount of alcohol. It is literal poison. I don’t have any shame about my previous drinking (aside from when I got too drunk and did dumb stuff). I gave my perspective of how I was a product of my alcohol-centric environment and how it took a long time to get away from feeling obligated to drink that

Big hugs to you Devonna. Thank you for sharing.

I just wrote half a novel in the comments saying basically the same thing. You capture it perfectly in fewer words. I was the “could never have one” person because what’s the point? I didn’t sip a cocktail for the taste, I wanted the taste AND the buzz. And once I had the buzz, I wanted to keep it.

I have The Empathy Exams which I loved. I’ll have to check out The Recovering. Thanks!

Anytime. I think you’re one of the people who had been very supportive of me back in 2021 when I stopped drinking and would write about my experience on SNS. Thank you for that. I just wrote a longer reply to Disco Sucks about my experience. I’m honestly shocked that pro-drinking mean girl shit is being posted in

For the people this article is talking about, “cheap and easy pleasures” don’t stop there. People come to rely on their substances to deal with trauma, stress, and the ups and downs of everyday life. It can be hard to step back from drinking even when you want to because our society revolves around it and “casual”

Being in recovery is hard. Addiction is a disease for many people, and for others, addictive behaviors are trying to fill some sort of hole left by trauma. It makes sense that one person would replace a substance addiction with something else, especially if you’re learning how to live in the world without the crutch

Not to mention a male plastic surgeon gets to go around telling us what beauty standards are “timeless.” These men (and women…But lots and lots of men) are profiting off our body dysphoria.

This will be unpopular. But I’d clap loudly and yell at my cats, then tap their noses if the clapping didn’t immediately work. I’ve had cats my whole life, usually get them as kittens but not always. Have never had a cat that regularly got on counters, tables, even coffee and side tables—they knew that soft furniture
