In using their last name would you use a gendered prefix? Like Ms. Smith and Mr. Butler? If so, what if a student is gender nonbinary? Would you use Mx. if they asked? As a faculty member I try to avoid using gendered language whenever possible so as to not accidentally misgendered someone.

Yes, it also helps with students who use a completely different first name, which may not be reflected on the initial roster -- specifically trans and non-binary students. The last thing you want to do is dead name a student on the first day (or ever).
