Thanks all...these are great recommendations. It seems that a prime lens (no zoom) is the way to go. I think I'll try out the 50mm f/1.8 for a first lens, and then maybe a 35mm when my budget grows.
What's the best amateur lens to get for a DSLR like the Canon Rebel XT? SHould I spring for a 35mm, 55mm? any suggestions?
@Nitesh!: i never had that problem...maybe you're having a problem with one of the extensions?
@GregtheMad: I was thinking the exact same thing the other day.

The problem with Sethi's system is that credit card bills are the trickiest, and since you are paying everything using your cradit cards, I could easily imagine someone forgetting a credit card payment at the beginning of the month and getting screwed.
Honestly, I have a better alternative I use. For bills, I keep a manilla folder labelled "Bills to Pay" that I keep within easy reach on my desk inbox. Whenever I check the mail, I open the bills, take a quick glance, and then just stash it in the folder.
yea, i noticed most companies are pretty lax about checking student IDs. Just take off the stickers altogether and you'll be fine.
