Anthropologists will look back and declare that once we had to stop rewinding and being kind to each other, the crumbling of the empire began.

I have plenty of friends who rightfully and justifiably deride climate change deniers and anti-vaxers as wrongheaded for ignoring science, evidence and logic. These same people often have strong opinions on this topic that mirror Deadspin’s. The only thing I’ve learned from talking to them is that we’ll all abandon…
Deadspin across several writers now have seemed to have taken the position that there is no difference between the biological sexes. They have quoted favorably an English professor Jennifer Doyle who all but said XX women are lazy and to brainwashed by society in order to compete with men. Her quote “Every woman…
I was taught to multiply in the parentheses such as this in my college phsyics and calculus:
“There is no stark line separating what men can do athletically and what women can. Some women, in fact, are bigger, faster, and stronger than some men.”
Sexual dimorphism in primates isn’t a social construct. It is constrained by biological realities. Are you confusing gender and sex? Or are you of the school that thinks humans are unique in the primate world and aren’t actually sexually dimorphic?
BECAUSE HIS GENETIC ADVANTAGES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE NATURE OF THE COMPETITION CATEGORY ITSELF OH MY GOD THE MICHAEL PHELPS ANALOGY IS SO FREAKING STUPID AND WRONG AND I AM SO TIRED OF PEOPLE GIVING IT LIKE THEY ARE HIGH-MINDED WHEN IT IS THE LOWEST OF THE LOW-BROW ANALOGY THAT DOES NOT ACTUALLY WORK AT ALL.
What Diana conveniently fails to tell you is
1) Caster Semenya has XY chromosomes. As a result, she has testes (internal) but no ovaries. How her entire article could fail to mention those important facts is beyond me. The reality is we have to separate men’s and women’s sports into two categories if we are going to…
Caster is XY, Diana. It’s *extremely* disingenuous to leave that out of this conversation.
What is the “veneer of science” behind testosterone and athletic performance? It is well established.
The Michael Phelps comparison is a poor one and not really a comparison at all. The women’s sport comparison to Michael Phelps is maybe Serena Williams, who everyone recognizes has distinct advantages over her competitors but it’s not remotely controversial.
But we don’t draw a line in flushing lactic acid or wingspan or double jointed ankles or all the arguments people have made for Michael Phelps. We do draw a line at sex.
I still remain largely undecided on the Caster case but I just find the comparison to Phelps intellectually dishonest.
“a condition that in it of itself does not confer on her any specific advantage.”
To join the choir: Deadspin’s refusal to acknowledge the complexity here is frustrating and undermines your credibility and good work elsewhere. Whether you want to draw the line at XX versus XY, or do a clustering analysis of testosterone levels (and performance); either way there is a clear basis to exclude…
Why is it so difficult for people to understand that the CAS ruling ONLY APPLIES to those with 46 XY DSD. If Caster falls under this ruling, which it is apparent she does, we need to look at what 46 XY DSD means SCIENTIFICALLY. All forms of 46 XY DSD have internal testes. If she falls into this category SCIENCE has…
When they create separate categories of competition based on lactic acid levels you might have a point.
As I’ve argued in other strings, this isn’t a good argument.
It’s almost like they wanted me to click on this and have a strong reaction.
