The price over there is inclusive of the VAT and other on road taxes, where as US pricing is advertised without sales or registration fees and taxes which amounts for a large portion of the price difference excluding the exchange rates.

I had the same experience when I got one as a loaner when my 335i was getting the fuel pump replaced(again). I drove it around for the afternoon and had a blast stomping on the go pedal from every stop light. It also handles really well even with the skinny tires and is just plain fun to drive.
