As an ex-Nissan employee who worked/lived both in the US and Japan for a decade, I would say the thesis of this article is spot on.

You hit the nail on the head. This was a corporate coup by character assassination. One wonders how Renault and the French government will respond given the value of the assets at stake. The Japanese government should also be concerned about the message this sends to foreign investors. Get ready for fireworks.

I’ve read that there were numerous people from within that were unhappy with him taking a salary from each of the companies. I’m not totally sure on the numbers but it’s something like $8M/year from Nissan $5M/year from Renault and $2M/year from Mitsubishi. Which for the record is significantly higher than Toyota boss

Sounds about correct. I highly doubt nobody knew about the salary misrepresentation. A lot of people is involved in this and the Japanese can be really dark in business. All of this seems very “fishy”.

It’s funny nobody is mentioning the possible involvement of the French government.

The Altima Alliance LEAFs Ghosen, an Outlander in Captur.

Everyone thought WWIII would be between the U.S. and Russia or China. Instead, it’ll begin with France and Japan. Get ready for a pissed off Godzilla to rampage through Paris.

Well, after personally meeting him in 2005, i can confidently say Mr. Ghosn wasn’t a man you could threaten. But then, he should’ve taken the hint when the board expressed their displeasure at the merger plans. In a corporate, it doesn’t matter who you are, you’re just a resource and the company can do just fine with

Good luck trying to sue a Japanese institution in Japan while being a foreigner!

It sounds to me like Nissan didn’t want to lose the low investment high return setup they had running. Ghosn would’ve fucked that up. Ghosn’s fucked a lot of things up. So while they’ve put up with a lot of his terrible compromises before, this was one that wasn’t a compromise, but just a plain terrible deal. And I

Carlos Ghosn was not CEO of Renault before heading to Nissan. He was an EVP at Renault. Went to Nissan as COO. Became CEO of Nissan a couple of years later. After making Nissan successful, he became CEO both of Nissan and Renault.

This strikes me as a situation where Nissan had better hope the charges stick. Because if it turns out they set him up for something he was NOT guilty of, he could come back at them for wrongful termination. However, I find that unlikely, given that nobody knows the CEO’s perfidy like his/her own accountants.

That’s not at all what happened. On an unrelated note, that’s a nice Deputy Editor position you have there. Sure be a shame if anything should happen to it.

Japanese authorities have suggested he be forced to remain in his position with Mitsubishi as punishment.

Sounds to me like ol’ Carlos ought to take Nissan to court and own that company for 1. Making him under report his income and then 2. hoisting him on the petard of that under reporting. Ghosn doesn’t care if the world knows what he makes, only Japanese sensibilities would be offended.

Are you sure?

Sure as hell smells like a hatchet job. It came from the inside, so someone definitely wanted him out - that, or they take compliance more seriously than I give them credit for.
