Brake lights are pretty distinguishable from taillights on newer cars, in fact, arguably verging on so bright as to be nearly hypnotic.

I agree, also if you are OCD the thought of the front lights being on and the rear ones being off causes a feedback loop that requires turning on the lights. So I guess DRLs are good for something after all.
