I would love to see some hard data on this (which i understand is nigh impossible.) I have seen this behavior in both sexes and it seems to go with a certain personality type.  

Beating you children in any way is the last resort of a frustrated and ineffective parent. Read a book, take a class, watch some Lifetime. I used to be an obligated reporter but still now, anytime I see this in public I step in and call the authorities if needed.

I think that all three of these people could benefit from seeing a therapist of some sort. There is no shame in seeking this kind of aid and I think it would help with underlying issues that led each to their situation.
