My technique has been to put in a butt connector and then solder into the middle of the connector, then heat shrink over it, also in a loom, zip tied to something so it it’s flopping around. I’ve got dozens or more in my rally car project and they’ve held up so far.

I’ve been learning to solder for some small home projects and your description of how to do the process correctly and why, really helped with some conceptual issues I’ve been having.

You know what takes up less space? A column shifter. I agree, I dislike the buttons in the current Tahoe/Suburban, but not nearly as much as I hate audi’s shifter.
