One of the very few stereotypes that are almost 100% true in my experience is that French waiters are rude and patronizing. Waitresses, too. I’ve rarely encountered one who didn’t act like (s)he was doing me a huge favor just to take my order.

John Milton wrote a dedication to the Second Folio, and Ben Jonson bent himself over to praise the guy, and that was barely 16 years after his death. While it’s true he wasn’t considered to be the best writer EVER until the 19th century, his reputation was far from hacky.

To my knowledge, nobody ever dismissed Shakespeare’s talent, and his works contain both popular entertainment and highly complex poetry that was definitely not intended for mass consumption.
