I don't think the theories themselves are the issue, nihilist philosophy has been around for a long time. It's more of the fact that Rust's dialogue in True Detective, which is passed off as original work, is pretty much identical in phrasing to lines written by Ligotti in Conspiracy Against the Human Race.
