If it's necessary for the story doesn't that make it non-gratuitous?

I think he's supposed to be a douchey Los Angeles guy.

I'd make another account just to give this another upvote if I weren't so lazy.

"This was like 12 or 13 years ago."

HAH. There's a reason I still live in SF even though I work down there. "Who needs urban activities and culture when you can have 1970's strip malls and multi-million dollar ranch houses from the '50s!"

Pilots are burdened with exposition and introducing characters, and often suck due to that challenge. Hell, it can take a whole first season for a show to figure itself out (e.g. Parks and Rec).

Absolutely; when I read about how the main character lived/worked at an incubator AND worked at a Google clone, it seemed like they were trying to efficiently but clumsily smash in different aspects of Silicon Valley culture… but if they actually derive some realistic conflict from the situation, that would be pretty

Non-compete clauses are effectively illegal in CA.

At 120k at California tax rates and a 6% 401k deduction, that's about $5550 every four weeks. A good one bedroom in a decent neighborhood is about 3k a month in the Bay area, and a two bedroom about 4.5k a month (or more)…. throw in other monthly payments (car, student loans, etc.) and 120k turns out to be not so

*Despite the increased tech activity in SF the center is still unfortunately in the South Bay and particularly in PA
*Gavin's title sounds like a founder who handed off business responsibility to someone else a la Eric Schmidt while still retaining a big chunk of the business (and a lot of internal respect)
