Not to minimize his douchiness at springing an “intro to the family” thing on you when you didn’t expect it but his family also sounds like a shower of assholes. I can’t imagine being so ungracious and unkind to a guest, no matter how unexpected their presence was.

My first takeaway is that Dr. Nary is *still there*! He was the head of Health Services 25 years ago, amazing! That is a *tiny* clinic, too: you can barely fit 20 people in it at all, never mind almost 30 people all over 6’2”. Drag.
It means that the people they hire are basically unemployable anywhere else. Nobody with options would willingly put up with being treated like that.

People have always had kids they “can’t afford”. Its only in the last 60-odd years that people have not been surrounded by extended family who could care for them while parents (yes including mom, who would have done intensive household, farm, or industrial work) could work.
