As long as the pads and cable don't wear out it wouldn't be surprised if these last 50 years. If the pads and cable wear out(3 years) higher end cans usually come with an extra cable and pair of pads. Cables and pads also have standard plugs and fits for the most part so replacement parts are everywhere.

And if you want some really affordable planar magnetics for ~$100 the Fostex T50RP's are waiting for you. They were the only other headphones besides the $5000 Stax 009 and $1000 LCD-2 to impress me at the head-fi meet i went to.

No the turbine pros are actually respected by audiophiles, Monster didn't get a endorsement by someone who everybody liked and then put subpar drivers into a cheap housing for a not cheap price with the turbines, but they did with the Beats.

Most higher end($100) headphones have this feature. Good luck with it.
