Since I don’t think there is any accusation of the votes themselves being tampered with, I can’t imagine how this could lead to questioning the legitimacy of the outcome.

Corepi is correct, it was a copyright issue. Besides, in the lore both “Space Marine” and “Imperial Guard” are still proper and more commonly used than the official titles. You can just keep calling them Imperial Guard.
