My thoughts exactly! I watched the Maltese Falcon on HBO Max the other day and several of the captions were completely different from the spoken dialog. This movie is a CLASSIC which came out over 80 years ago, and they still couldn’t be bothered to get it right!

Civil War was a much better intro to him than Black Panther  

My understanding is Amazon use their ultra-cheap gig service to outsource their subtitles.

I wish there was option to have just the dialogue, and not sound effects transcribed. I don’t need to read the lyrics to the music playing in the background, or that there are sirens in the distance.

Also the lack of any kind of formatting settings for subtitles. Disney+ has two settings, on or off. 

Yeah, nothing is more irritating than turning on the subtitles to catch some turn of phrase someone with a thick UK accent said, and you realize whoever did the subtitles had no idea what was said either.

A gimmick commentor? In this economy?

Audiences will delight as this panther of a movie slinks through the night! Take note, Blake Edwards, this is how you make a sequel after a star has passed. Coogler doesn’t need to resort to deleted scenes to make this kitty purr! Although the missus’ wouldn’t shut up about her confusion of Angela Basset/Shirley…

I use subtitles no matter the mix (things just click for me better with text), and I have an equally annoying pet peeve in regards to that: Every streaming service seems to have a large number of shows/movies where whoever transcribed the dialogue is totally winging it themselves.

About 20 years ago I rented Alien 3, and due to some combination of the filmmaking and the wear-and-tear on the VHS tape, the dialog was unintelligible, the sound effects were overpowering, and the picture was muddy except for a few sequences with obtrusive, shiny-looking CGI.

I also find that in dark scenes, a lot of streaming services compress the shit out of the video so it’s impossible to not get something that looks like a 90s video game cut scene. It doesn’t even matter if the video is streaming perfectly, any dark scene will just have a bunch of awful pixelization.

I recently re-watched Crimson Peak, every filmmaker working today should take a lesson in lighting from that movie. It’s good modern special effects on top of a modern take on 70s/80s colored gel lighting used to great effect. There’s no reason for the lazy way nearly everything is lit these days.

I’m glad when something renews interest in the classics like this!
