Re: your last paragraph - there actually was a gnostic sect that believed that this was how the Bible should be read, and that Jehovah was a deceiver. That he wasn't really the creator god, but a lesser god, sort of a nasty, trickster type character, and that understanding this makes the whole book make sense.
