Aw, nards. Well, it’s still funny in my heart.

Oh, well. FOILED YET AGAIN BY GROWN-UP WORLD.

What makes the story for me is that she bet all 600$ on her answer. It’s like when I didn’t know the answer on a test and I would write in something to try and make my teacher laugh and just hope I’d get credit for it, except in grown-up world with human money.

If capitalism were a perfect machine, I would agree with your idea about the pay gap: Because women are paid less, companies would hire more of them than men. Unfortunately (wait, no, mostly fortunately), capitalism is not a perfect machine; it’s translated through human hands. So, for example, in order for your idea

Can’t hurt to check it out, especially if you get it from a library instead of paying for it!

I loved BACHELORETTE, and I legit can’t wait for this one. I am disappointed to see that Headland has lost a bit of the bite, though - I know some people were super turned off by how much of a complete asshole everyone in Bachelorette was, but that was part of the appeal to me. So many movies try to paper over the

Where is your evidence on the pay gap not existing? I’d love to see it. Apologies if you posted elsewhere, Kinja is kind of clumsy as all hell to dig through.

Ah, I see what you mean. Apologies. Yes, in the two sequences meant to satirize media representation and hyper-sexualized spokespeople, de Landro is definitely borrowing from Miller, particularly DKII-era Miller. However, if you look at the rest of the sequences published, particularly the full sequential pages

I’m going to be serious for a second: Do you actually want to have this conversation? Because you can look at pretty literally any field and look at things like payment, power positions, etc... and see massive, society-wide gender discrimination. It’s on your bookshelves. It’s on your blu-ray shelves. It’s in your

Ah, so women should settle for just being “kind of oppressed” or “pretty oppressed?” After all, they aren’t “super oppressed” like they are in some countries.

If you think THE TWILIGHT ZONE was regularly a subtle show, I suspect you’ve seen maybe three episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE. They may be the three best, sure, but on average, that show was typically just as blunt.

I’m not really sure what you mean by this? Any chance you could elaborate?

I’d say it’s aiming more for satire than straight-up commentary, and satire typically runs a bit broader. Combine that with a heavy influence from one of the bluntest genres in existence - exploitation films - and you have a very on-the-nose book.

Or it’s a work of science fiction satire, and you’re wrong on both accounts!

If you think Valentine de Landro’s work looks anything like Miller’s - which is itself an iconic, groundbreaking art style - you seriously need to read more comics or stop trying to guess at comparisons.

“When feminists flap at the lips.”

This book is really great. But it’s worth mentioning, it’s not just a feminist polemic - it’s also really fucking fun. Inventive, intelligent social sci-fi that borrows heavily from exploitation films, especially blaxploitation and ‘women in prison’ films. If you have fond memories of watching weird, skeevy sci-fi at

(That said, the film obviously could have changed the point of the doc, so your point stands. Just trying to say that, if they hew even close to what the doc was saying, none of these white people are meant to be ‘good guys’.)

Find the activists, like Lexi Alexander or Ramaa Mosley, and support reform within whatever Guild you’d be working in. Recently, Lexi and a number of other female directors tried to introduce reform that would get female directors more work... and it was voted down by female directors who didn’t want to make waves.

I mean, in the original documentary, the point was the criticize the US for purposely propping up an out-of-touch, unpopular leader through fear-tactics rather than letting the people vote on the issues. It’s not about the character discovering the meaning of democracy, but about the meaning of democracy being
