Why didn't people respond to a thoughtful, borderline-domestic drama the same way they responded to a gritty crime drama with a bunch of violence?

Why is Amy Acker not a HUGE TV star? Has she ever been less than 'very good' in something?
It's great, but I'd argue that it lacks the depth to be next The Wire. I'd say - and I mean this as no slight whatsoever, because I love both shows - that it's the next The Shield in that it combines brutal pacing, shocking violence, and intense stylization to tell a harrowing urban thriller… and, in general,…
He'll organize your sock drawer!
Not only did I like Iron Man 3 better than Iron Man 2, I liked it just a tiny bit better than Iron Man 1.
@avclub-d72f705337e5adcf7e33ec0381c5f5b2:disqus - Either you haven't read his BLUE BEETLE run or you're wrong.
I saw them live recently - I initially went because k.flay was one of the openers - and they were a lot of fun. I was very pleasantly surprised, and they played most of their new album stuff, too, so I can say that it's a really solid pop album.
Well, as per Film Crit Hulk, apparently most Emmy voters are employees of the networks, and they are allowed to vote for shows they worked on as well as shows on their own networks… AND HBO apparently has the biggest block of employees (because there are technically 7 HBO channels), so…. CBS has the next highest,…
@avclub-ec581d0fa82907dc6f58d1e70bf346b0:disqus Snyder is solid from time to time - hell, as you say, "The Black Mirror" is very good - but he's wildly uneven, has severe pacing issues, and has a lot of trouble ending his stories. He seems like the kind of writer who probably had some legitimately great stories in…
@avclub-ba11e5f269e8f132321d3ac144289c97:disqus - Soule's debut didn't wow me, and I was getting pretty disenchanted with DC overall, which made it easy to give up after one issue. I just read Swamp Thing 23.1 because I was asked to review a bunch of the Villain's Month issues, but it wowed me enough that I'll be…
Soule's Swamp Thing villain issue was (surprisingly) the best issue of the character's series, hands down (Post New 52, I mean; still don't have nothing on Moore).
@avclub-945ba977c27d196cdeaf6cbe4ff682f4:disqus - Kurt Busiek's comic series ASTRO CITY actually had a fascinating issue dealing with that. Basically, a lawyer is hired by the mob to try and get their guy off for a murder he committed in broad daylight in front of dozens of witnesses. Superheroes/aliens/etc… have…
It's a shame Tatiana Maslany wasn't around back then.
'Ironically racist' is the same thing as 'actually racist'. It's like the 'flammable' and 'inflammable' of, uh, racism.
@avclub-b3fe4f5a8793b5499e143cdf1253caff:disqus - actually, you'd think the limited supply wouldn't be as much of a hindrance in a war as it would in an occupation. After all, you can probably skimp on Ketracel for front line ships/vehicles - dead soldiers don't need the White, so it would actually literally become…
Hey now, we're in the season of "The Magnificent Ferengi", so expect them to get some love.
Holy crap. I watched Step Up 3 for the first time two days after You're Next, and I didn't once realize that was the same actress. I wondered why she looked so familiar.
That was the best scene in not just the movie, but the series to date. Step Up 3 had plenty of problems, but that scene alone saved the movie.
I rewatched it recently. It's even worse the second time. Like, a lot worse. I thought it would be better, because pretty things would be exploding and I knew not to expect anything more than that, but somehow, that knowledge made it worse.
You'd think an 'over the top' trick would cost way less than an under the top one.
