Even though I'd mainly use my Gmail & Google Apps accounts via the web interface, I actually used to have them set up in Thunderbird as well, for just this purpose - marking individual messages in a thread as unread.

@RuralVirologist: How would one sterilize a batch of soil using a microwave? I'd instinctively guess that it wouldn't take much, since microwaves are lethal to living things (at least, I was told never to put the cat in there... :p ), but it seems perhaps too obvious an easy a solution...

@loh: You can already delete a single message from a thread - in the menu in the top-right of the message you no longer want, click the down arrow and pick "Delete this message".

I'd love to see them add the ability to mark a single message in a conversation thread as unread. As it is, if I want to mark a single message as unread after I've opened it, I have to do so in Thunderbird IMAP (or another IMAP client). Marking as unread in Gmail's web interface marks the entire conversation as

Installing the latest version now; it'd be nice if the installer offered an option to choose the install location... :-/
