To be technical, I'm not sure it's a left-right thing at all. I'm pretty sure the only proper reaction to this is horror, and the rest is just wrong.

What distinguishes a synth from the instrument it's emulating is its coldness, its detachedness, its sense of artifice. Both have their place. You can't make a real player sound like a synth, either.
