"Designer babies"?
"Designer babies"?
I hate to be That Person, but it's Gattaca with three a's. Which is important because the title is based on the letters for the four nucleobases of DNA (guanine, adenine, thymine, and cytosine).
Classic Honeypot
well, as with any other mental health condition, people with eating disorders can be involuntarily committed regardless of age. For routine medical procedures, such as vaccines, X-rays, exams, etc. I don't think a teenager should have to call her mom at work at 4pm and have her fax a note authorizing a follow up x ray…
A co-worker's baby (too young to be vaccinated) died from complications from the measles after catching it from an unvaccinated child in her own group of friends.
A few years ago, I moved to a city in the deep south, and got settled and started looking for a house to buy. Immediately, people — all people who were near-complete strangers to me, because new city and all — started coming out of the woodwork to tell me what neighborhoods I, as a single white woman, could not live…
A couple I'm friends with is now all anti vax since their daughter was born last year. Up until the most recent wave of friend-babies, only a few people knew this. And of course they take their baby everywhere, to all the social functions, shows, visits to people who also have children.
No, not even close. Polio, MMR, and the other basic vaccines children receive when they're babies are often covered and free via insurance and are otherwise very affordable.
A little off topic but I like watching home buying shows and it seems like so many parents flip out over stairs. "I can't have stairs in my home because my precious snowflake could get hurt." Huh...how did I survive the stair epidemic of my childhood?! It's a modern miracle.
OMG the "its cold" climate change deniers....
You can't actually change an anti-vaxxers mind. In fact, trying to be nice and reasonable and giving them facts and statistics makes them more likely to believe they are right. It's called the backfire effect. (The book The Unpersuadables discusses why the backfire effect happens and the cogitive reasons for it.)
Ugh…If she were pregnant she'd qualify as "legally emancipated" and would be able to get it on her own. After a doctor's office refused to let me consent to my own x-ray at 17, I'm really thinking that from 16 on, you should be able to make ALL the medical decisions yourself.
I volunteer in a school that is high poverty and about 98% Latino/2% black and I am guessing quite a few of the parents are undocumented. I asked the school nurse if they had trouble with vaccine refusal and she laughed and said, "that is a rich white person problem." The parents are only too thrilled to vaccinate…
People from Missouri. Oy. I was a sales rep for a builder in not-Missouri, and it was there that I encountered what I now call the "Hey, white person to white person" syndrome. The community where I was selling was middle class, had good schools, and was an easy commute to several major employers in our area. It was…
This guy is horrible. But is it awful that I was confused by the headline? I thought he attacked a computer server and I had no idea why it was a hate crime.
For sure. And I should say, having taught at an Ivy League, stupidity and education are not mutually exclusive.
Something tells me the conversation and reaction to all of this would be preeeetty different if the anti-vaxxers currently spreading horrible diseases around the country were poor and brown instead of rich and white. Instead of "personal belief exemptions" we'd have kids getting ripped from their parents by CPS,…
im so upset right now
I have to say (as someone on the autism spectrum).
Anti-vaxxers make me absolutely BONKERS. I just cannot handle these types of people! And sorry, but your tenacious desire to maintain your delusions is not so sacrosanct that you should be allowed to put others at risk.
