Marine transport is much more fuel efficient per pound and mile than ground transport. Big ships may seem all dirty and evil because they belch thick smoke into the air, but they’re nonetheless more efficient.

While I usually agree that Americans are rather barbare, I believe that there are legitimate economic reasons behind this, mainly centered around cost-effectiveness. Europe’s population density allows for beautiful infrastructure that North America simply cannot justify.
