I like your idea of Hannah just assuming the worst and giving up because it's easier. That's much more interesting than having her be trapped in an unrealistically ironclad contract.

I'm a literary agent, and, you're right, Hannah should have been able to get those rights back! While it's always possible that Hannah signed an exceptionally shitty contract, assuming that it's a standard book contract, she would have several ways to proceed.
