Battle Royale was also about the protagonist trying to find a way to survive the situation he finds himself in, while somehow ensuring that he can put an end to the program. Sure, it had amazing amounts of violence but it never came without some heavy psichological damage to the cast (Save for that one guy).

To be honest with you, I could go down the street and find a street merchant selling the movie on a fucking DVD. It's very likely he picked a bootleg copy of it and sat down through it; shit like that happens, so it's not too far fetched.

Make a cell-shaded adaptation of Battle Royale and there you go, it's like the Hunger Games only based on an older license waiting to be exploited. Not to mention that it could have an stylized manga look, which in turn would give the developer a free pass to go nuts with violence.
