The irony being exiling him is the kinder option. You run into him later and he’s made peace with his decisions and his wife stays with him. If you let him off it’s with all evidence made public, everyone knows he attempted murder and hates him. His wife leaves him and he becomes despondent and goes back into stasis. 

I kept muttering to my screen: “Is attempted murder not a thing in this universe? WTF.”
