To me, even "increased connectivity between the populace can lead to a situation of quasi mob-rule" has become a bit of a cliche and over-repeated idea, though. I think you're right and it just depends on the person.
I'm somewhere in the middle on it, and it's partially because of what you said about ideological cliches. It doesn't seem that controversial to suggest that television and the media in general are out of control and unbelievably invasive, particularly with a television show.
