I get it, there were no Black people represented at the Oscars this year. As a person of Pakistani origin, and specifically Punjab, I’d love to see some rep for us too, and we’ve had it tangentially recently in the form of noms for Riz Ahmed.

When people view a dance and care more about who is dancing rather than the dance itself, something has gone wrong.

Anyway, were the white dancers British? If not, I feel like this too is an outrage and I demand more British represenation.

I mean it’s an Indian song originally performed by Indian performers from an Indian movie that deals with Indian history and anti-colonial sentiment.

The Indian dancers declined the invitation. What else were they to do?

trump was so bad he broke the white people here too

Yet another article around “outrage” created by two people’s posts on Instagram or Twitter.

Is it cultural appropriation to recreate a dance from a fun, blockbuster movie? I understand the offensiveness in appropriating meaningful cultural or religious traditions. But I feel like light weight, crossover media marketed toward an international audience is fair game for international reinterpretations.

So far, the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences has yet to issue an official statement in response to the critiques.’ Because it’s a BS woke take that doesn’t deserve one.

I gotta share this story. Last night at work I witnessed overwhelming racism:

I was on lunch and it was shift change mid-blizzard (Ontario’s having some interesting weather rn). One of the two cashiers went on break. The only cashier on was a young Black girl. So this older female customer goes to her line and actually

If white people are involved, it’s racist.

Wait tho... the actual performers felt they didn’t have time to prepare and the choreographer selected dancers they were familiar with that were coincidentally non south-asian.... What did they want to happen here? It sounds like the options they would have preferred was either thrusting indian dancers into an

Hollywood awarded 2 asian actors and a movie that represents asian-american culture with 7 oscars.

Wonder how much trawling of the internet it took to find somebody who didn’t like the fun dance number cos something something racism? Gotta generate that content and engagement somehow, even if it makes American Liberalism look utterly histrionic.

I’ve obtained a leaked draft of the Academy’s response.

I was more offended by the mongrelization of a Carpenter’s song.

ok

The people of Charlie Hebdo definitely didn't deserve what happened, but this isn't an issue of free speech, its an issue of actions have consequences. Far too often people will talk out of line, say something or do something that reflects poorly on them, and then they try to use "free speech" as a Get Out of Trouble

I'm going to stop defending my choices to assholes and just start using the simple but brilliant sign off "because fuck you that's why."

I'm really glad I like my parents.
