Is there a remote that wakes a computer from sleep mode? I'm spending $80/year to power my htpc.

i do my best thinking in the bathroom, so this works for me.

YEAAAAAHHHH!!!!!

@HurtsSoGood: I love this idea. One of the knocks against it is that cable packages subsidize niche channels that otherwise wouldn't get enough subscribers. I think a way around this would be to provide "credits" for shows on any channel, but you can subscribe to channels that you don't want to waste credits on.

@Jeremy: surprised this wasn't mentioned. You get low cost, low power, and tons of options. For the more technical types I would recommend the guru plug. Same cpu but with esata. You don't get the pogoplug service or software, but can install linux.

@Robert Raines: I stand corrected. I had forgotten about this news and I apologize. I thought gpu acceleration on osx was using an opencl implementation and not specifically video-decoding hardware.

@Dilpickle1: that's why I use a series of carbon fiber nano-tubes.

Neatgear WNDR3700 simultaneous dual-band with 2tB hard drive attached. Great for streaming HD around the house.

@Michael Reynaga: my T400 stopped posting about 2 months after I got it. They're my first choice when it comes to a Windows PC, but by no means flawless.

A lot of issues get fixed by firmware, so check the most recent reviews, not necessarily the most recommended reviews. Tracking issues through time on a forum helps identify fixes as well. This is also a good place to see how the company handles support. If they try to blame it on something else (ie "update your video

What's the best solution to transcode a stream to meet the bandwidth/cpu/resolution limitations of a netbook? I would like to stream a 1080p movie to my netbook without it exploding.

can you clone a drive from one format to another. For example, I'd like to move about 1tb of data from an NTFS drive to an EXT3 drive.

@tylerf: I would get the mac. It's got a great screen and that giant multitouch trackpad makes it a joy to use. People focus so much on specs and price, but the screen and trackpad make it so much better for the kind of work you want to do.

@lindsayk: maybe if you spent a little more you wouldn't need to keep buying new ones?

@ninedosus: 'tastekid', great recommendations, summaries, includes books and movies.

I would like to see a lifehacker poll on what people owed or got refunded.

@moo083: no, apple doesn't allow compiled binaries to be imported by any means.

rendering/zooming are underwhelming. I've got a fast connection most of the time, so I see little value here.
