It works. Through Chani’s eyes, we see Paul for who he truly is: a man as power-hungry as the rest of them.

Yes and no. The Bene Gesserit always intended to bring forth the Kwisatz Haderach, aka a male reverend Mother(err Father). It is not clear if they planned for that person to be a messiah or not. The seeding of religious prophecy among planets was a different project in the Sisterhood designed as a defense mechanism…

The Bene Gesserit breeding plan is not a “long con.” They fully intend to bring forth a messiah and in fact, are successful. They just can’t control him as they had planned. The only “con” might be that the breeding program and its goals are secret.

Croupier is much more Owen’s alley than James Bond. He would have actually made a miserable 007, with even more sadness and exhaustion than Craig, without the lightness that Craig could also bring to the part. But sadness and exhaustion were precisely what was needed for Children of Men.
