While I am surprised that a mistake like this would have been made, I applaud any automaker that voluntarily recalls cars after finding a potential problem and owns up to their mistakes. I like a company that takes responsibility like that and it makes me respect Porsche.

I think that in the early days of the car, the UK was one of the countries that were big on horsepower as a tax basis, and remained so until just after the war (with lingering effects on engine design).
To put it into perspective, an E46 330Ci makes only 15 less horsepower than a US-spec E36 M3. We really got shafted here in the US.
