Agreed 100%. I think anyone with true diagnosable mental health issues should think twice before starting up a heavily restrictive diet, but for a lot of people they’re a decent framing device to reevaluate your relationship with food.

Yes, diet restriction can cause food obsession, that’s been known since the Minnesota Starvation Experiment at the end of WW2. My wife worked in eating disorder treatment for a while, and while I was very much on the outside of the issue, I never heard of any person in eating disorder treatment that didn’t have some kind of serious comorbidity, be it depression, anxiety, or a litany of other mental health diagnoses.
