Art is a reflection of culture. Our culture has been stewing on the notion of toxic masculinity for a little while now.

This is a really moving article. The one line, “Who wants this?” is so powerful in its pain that it became hard to read.
Thank you for sharing this story. I know how hard it is and also how important it is for other parents who have gone through this to hear these stories. It’s such a lonely and isolating experience.
Thank you for your story. I’m so sorry for what happened to you.
This is such a powerful, heartbreaking piece. I appreciate that it is being published here.
Brooks is usually annoying af, but that op-ed is particularly tone-deaf. I mean, yeah! Let’s abandon an issue that doesn’t affect me personally at all. Sounds good!
My wife and I know how you feel. We had a late term abortion at 21 weeks after we found out our son Avett was diagnosed with HLHS. Your story brought it all back and as I sit here writing this with tears in my eyes please know you’re not alone. You and your husband share the same story with many of us. My wife and I…
Nah. I can see why you say this, as I think a lot of perceptive viewers/readers are trending this way, I’d argue that the “gross misinterpretation of the text” is the idea that:
So much this. I am heeeeeere for the cheese.
Trivial aside: I think you want “hawking” for “hocking”. To hock something is to pawn it, not promote it.
I don’t disagree with you, but I might take it a step even farther.
Magazine ads have been marketing aesthetic and lifestyle for years. That’s all influencers are, really. They’ve taken the place of magazine ads. When it was dudes in fancy offices putting particularly selected women in these positions to sell products…
This stuff is completely out of control. ONe of the mother’s at my kid’s dance studio is currently starting an instagram for her daughter, because the daughter wants to be a brand ambassador and influencer.
I’m a self-proclaimed cheese plate expert (because unlike this woman who probably doesn’t actually consume them, I do). Totally with you on the crackers. I was insulted that she didn’t call Humboldt Fog by its name. That cheese has been around for A WHILE to have a cream line like that. And those are Castlevetranos,…
I feel like a large part of society’s disdain for “influencers” is veiled misogyny. They are just marketers, nothing more, nothing less. But they get disdain for being women and girls and for marketing “silly” things, things based on aesthetics or “lifestyle.”
Yeah, I admit I’m super disappointed to not see hardly anything on my rep (Ilhan Omar!!) who also has some fantastic progressive ideas and an amazing history. I really like AOC, but she’s taking up a lot of air in the room, which may be where some of these criticisms are coming from.
Well, and logical best courses of action aren’t always logical.
Has Jezebel noticed the several, even many, other women newly elected to congress or nah? Because this is getting a little Kardashian.
I’m sure I’ll get flamed for not fangirling, but WaPo has a good Op ed detailing why folks are not having AOC yet.
Don’t mistake annoyance for fear.
It is very easy for someone in a +80 district to take extreme positions. Governing, however, is much harder. Wonderful for her to bring her voice to the debate, but put that energy to good use in passing actual legislation (or building a coalition). Torpedoing folks in the midwest/suburbs because of ideological purity…
