TBH, it came out at a bad time... when games were trying new things and I felt it lacked the polished story of the previous games. I really loved 1 and 2... 3 had it’s moments but I agree it was boring most the time

My personal opinion
I didn’t find the two sequel films really added to the series so leaving them out plus I recommend the full series not the OVAs of Stand Alone Complex

Also has a slight bladerunner feel to it as well but minus the cyberpunk... but as you said the first episode will hit you right in the feels pretty hard
