Yes and no... big companies will block a set of IPs of known popular VPN providers. For example when Netflix was pressured into enforcing geo blocking.. if you grab a VPS or setup a VPN on your buddies router it’ll still work but if you use a popular VPN provider it won’t

Exactly this... for movies even renting out a theater and doing a private showing is a no unless the film has been rated in many places. No idea who it’s protecting :/
