But they are legally required to be there, and it is a rule that is rarely, though not never, broken. In my state, a violation is an immediate, non appealable $5,000 fine.

I did these kinds of analyses in grad school. Even used some of Dr Reich’s software as well as others. I’m a few years out of the field, but it should be noted that in general the error bars are very large. Estimating dates of migration for these samples was probably accurate to within 1,000-2,000 years.
