I doubt that this is specific to Mormons. I think a number of conservative religious leaders would take the same approach.

I realize it’s a free 12 month loan, yes. It’s true you could have put that in a savings account with a 0.1% interest rate. Some people like getting that money all at once even if they could have earned a few cents on it over the past few months.
