I had the good/bad fortune of coming in after everything has been said and done. I never get to see REM live, and I don't get to look forward to anything new from them except 25th anniversary rereleases, but on the plus side, I got to explore their entire discography free from expectations.
Yeah, it's not like ear murder or anything, it's just kind of poorly paced with a lot of songs that fell flat in the studio recording. Not a huge fan of some of Stipe's lyrical stylings on the album either. Sounds often like rhyming for the sake of rhyming to the detriment of quality wordplay.
Ha, someone else who doesn't care for Nightswimming. I thought I was the only one. People say it's touching without being overly sentimental, but it sounds pretty damn sentimental to me. I dunno, something about Michael's vocals (especially "deseeeerves") and the instrumentation just comes off as a little too cloying…
Such a good call. Man-Sized Wreath is great.
