Population or fair distribution, it's all the same. Even with fair distribution, the population would have killed themselves because mice don't limit themselves to their environment. I don't think they can - as opposed to humans, who definitely can but generally don't.
It seems awfully convenient that we're just now reinterpreting the results of this experiment to perfectly match our current social issue du jour.
