That’s a mighty fair point- it’s definitely not called a silence button. Still- “mute button” is wrong for so many other reasons- but upon further reflection I feel super silly even still talking about it.

Oh I’m sure I could do it from a complexity standpoint, as I’m not a moron in that regard. However, getting shocked by 240 or fucking it up has the potential for far more dire consequences than the jingle I feel at 120. It’s a risk tolerance thing.
