Years ago I had the dubious pleasure of spending some time in the heart of this region during an especially brutal run of 20 days over 100F. It seemed like total madness to me as an Aussie, used to conserving every drop, seeing all that exposed water in those canals just evaporating away for nothing.

Yeah, that’s becoming a tried and tested method. They do that here in WA to combat fruit fly, you just create then release millions of sterile (males I think?) flies which severely impacts breeding in the next gen. Do that enough times and the numbers plummet.
