I don’t know. Possibly it’s something that’s changing in younger generations. I do think the school system can do more - but this goes for many things concerning ‘outside’ information. Lots of Japan is turned inward, but this is changing (too) slowly.

It’s never a good idea to generalise a population or people based on limited input. For what it’s worth, whenever this subject came up with Japanese friends or my Japanese family, they are very much aware and ashamed. What happens here is not good, smart or tasteful - but your insights are not very well founded.…
