Too often shows like this race toward the finish line and leave little time for a denouement, but this episode gave it all to us: getting Simone not only out of Russia but in the witness chair before Congress, the vindication of the President...and then they fucked it all up with her…

Your suggestion that more time might have been “bought” by Carrie ditching her wig wouldn’t work with the plot line. The idea was to allow Saul to get out of the country with Simone, if Carrie were to break cover running as Simone, i.e. ditching the wig the game would be up, wouldn’t it?

Or at least relegate the Carrie-off-her-meds chunk to a montage in the opening episode, and get the inevitable Brody hallucination/Damien Lewis cameo out of the way early.
