I think I just peed a little from excitement...

CARB says engine swaps are okay if it’s from a similar vehicle (in this case from another SUV) that is the same model year or newer. It’s still CP, but it could be CA legal. Doubtful, but definitely possible.

1. thank you, it actually turned up a few days later about 6 blocks away

Was there ever any doubt?

For all my comments defending this guy, you just reminded me I had a car stolen in just this manner. Wasn’t even cold outside, I just ran in to grab a water bottle for the drive, came back out and the car was gone.

This story could get more interesting if the ticketee decided that was a matter that needed to be addressed in court.

Man, I feel for your friend. I would hope his insurance would be willing to pursue the other guy. But who are we kidding, insurance isn’t to protect us, it’s to make them rich, so they’d probably say no police report not our problem.

I’m pretty sure that’s standard procedure to leave it running because of the electric draw of the equipment, they don’t want to end up with a dead battery. They for sure leave it running in non-emergency situations. I saw two cop cars down the street from my house running for probably 30 minutes with not a soul in

That sounds suspect, typically the library is run by the city and therefore public property. I think there are a good number of officers who won’t write a ticket unless there is property damage, and by that they mean at least some big scratches that weren’t there before. So if the other person just touched you bumper

Thank you, came here to say the same thing! The car could’ve been unregistered and uninsured and big whoop until the officer witnesses it operating on public streets. #getoffmylawn

I think that’s all the proof we need. But this guy is in LA, all he has to do is take the car out of his yard and up to Beverly Hills and he’ll probably find a buyer.

Weren’t these 20-30 grand just 4 years ago? It looks nice, but doesn’t seem to add up, CP

I look forward to the future Jalopnik article :)

The guy who did make it is a solid reminder to never lift

I was wondering about that. I figured they arbitrarily created the 1000 mile cut off to get the worst dollar per mile ratio and the previous 3000+ miles could have been trouble free. So their $37k over 1000 miles was also $37k over 4000 miles (or more). It’s just how they chose to frame it.

have definitely searched this, typically with “vw bug” in the make/model field

That’s more what I’m looking for, just have to sort through all the listings that say street legal with a “not” in front of it
