Hell, jump right in - this is supposed to be a debate, isn't it? I think the important thing is the context of the time - which was full of pompous politicians and others pontificating on behalf of "Society" - ie. a load of vested interests like trade unions, local government cartels, etc.

Ah, the old "There's no such thing as society" myth comes around again. Lord knows Mrs Thatcher made enough mistakes - as was almost inevitable when in power for so long - but that misrepresentation was the most calculated slander by the Left. I bet even now for most of those teenagers dancing round the bonfires…
