I find Zack’s reviews to be realistic and honest about the highs, lows and potentials of a show that can bite off more than it can chew. For therapeutic reviews check out iO9.

Listen, I’m just here to write the blogs. What they decide to do is up to them.

Well, miserable goddamn hack writer Alex Kurtzman’s now the showrunner for one.

Discovery? I dunno, lack of character development, bad editing, bad direction, bad science, unnecessary and easy to see coming plot twists, empty fanservice in some places while at the same time ditching big chunks of canon, etc.

Different times. Running concurrently with TNG and then Voyager allowed DS9 to exist in a world where the major Federation ideals were represented in full elsewhere. This gave DS9 a chance to peak into the shadows and explore the edges of those ideals, specifically in the situation of a long drawn-out war. It earned

Perhaps it’s the show’s obvious shame and self-loathing at all the things that people like about Star Trek? That’s what it is for me.

I can only speak for myself. It’s not that I’m rooting against the show. Nobody wants to see a good new Star Trek show more than I do. But I find Discovery to be so incredibly disappointing that I can’t bring myself to say anything positive about it. Star Trek should be the easiest show in the world to make. There’s

No! Damn it, no more time travel.

“and is now critiquing it for staying too true to Federation ideals”

Eh, you are of course welcome to disagree with the review (and I’m glad you enjoyed the season), but I think it’s perfectly logical to say ‘You shouldn’t have done that, but if you were going to do it, you should have done it right.’ I.e., the reviews are positing that sticking with Star Trek ideals from the get-go

I like how magical realms like these let people shoot magic fire out of their four hands at three headed chimeras or whatever, but fae Black people hailing from frozen wastelands who don’t know what spears are is probably too god damned farfetched for them

This seems like a Damned if you, damned if you don’t kind of situation. I’m happy they published the adventure, even if they stumbled. They tried, which is a weird thing I have come to appreciate from white people around me as a PoC. It’s awkward sometimes, but I appreciate they try to include me and be mindful of me

Star Trek: The Ongoing Discovery of Issues that Push the Release Date back

No. You're Wrong.

Of all the Trek shows I have ever watched in my life, Deep Space Nine’s writing was the most... human.

I personally find Beyond the Stars to be even darker. It softens it somewhat if you consider that Benny might not be real, but otherwise the story ends on a real downer with Benny being one of the show’s more tragic characters.

I love “In the Pale Moonlight” but I think it only works because there were already nearly 400 episodes of Star Trek showing Star Fleet captains obeying the Prime Directive and generally doing the right thing. I honestly believe that if you had even 4 or 5 total episodes like “In the Pale Moonlight” it would stop

Though I did appreciate when Star Trek was willing to go dark, like in In the Pale Moonlight. In fact, DS9 proved that you can tell more dark stories in Star Trek.

Even if 99.9% of the population did just that, the world would still do fine on the efforts of the other .1%.
