Hotel GM here for 20 years. AAA does have standards for each star rating and they do inspect the hotels annually. Nothing really in depth but to at least verify your services are what they say. All that said, TripAdvisor is king now for driving business to your hotel. They are #1 site, by far, for reviews and good

It feels like a wild ride the first few times you do it, but like many other things it proves benign with repetition.
