As a former McDonald’s employee, this is 100% correct.  The machine is never actually broken.  Most locations shut the machine down around 9pm or so for cleaning, and yes, its a pain in the ass, and no one is in a rush to do it quickly. 

The newer machines (last 20 years) don’t have to be taken apart to clean and sanitize. The issue is when the sanitize cycle hits an issue, it locks out and has to be COMPLETELY disassembled and reassembled. The early morning people have plenty to do without adding that to their list.
