Modern (large diameter) wheels tend to have tires that are low-profile. I would imagine that older, smaller wheels with their fat sidewalls actually used more rubber in their manufacturing.
The BMW TT inline 6 makes more power stock-for-stock than a 2JZTT, and can be tuned to similar power levels with similar mods.
